Noel Mewton-Wood (1922-1953),

The first BMS Historic release, in the Society's Twenty-Fifth Anniversary year. Digitally remastered and re-released for the first time since its original appearance on LP in 1952, this performance of Sir Arthur Bliss's mighty Piano Concerto remains for many the most exciting, in both musical and virtuosic terms, yet recorded. The generous coupling includes the two other twentieth-century piano concertos Mewton-Wood recorded before his tragic death at the age of thirty-one in December 1953.

Arthur Bliss (1891-1975)
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra
Igor Stravinsky ((1882-1971)
Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments
Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)
Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings, Op35

Noel Mewton-Wood (piano) Harry Sevenstern (trumpet) - Utrecht Symphony Orchestra etc./ Walter Goehr, recorded 1952-1953

"Mewton-Wood gives the performance of his life, a performance of youthful ardour (and endurance) ... a most exciting and satisfactory affair." (Alec Robertson, Gramophone, November 1953

"...(Mewton-Wood's) dumbfounding account of Bliss's Piano Concerto ... "
